LOUISVILLE Branch NAACP Awards $22,700 in Scholarships On August 17, the Education and Scholarship Committee of the Louisville Branch NAACP held its Annual Scholarship Awards Program and Reception at the Portland Memorial Baptist Church. During the ceremony, $22,700 in scholarships were presented to 12 deserving students who will attend 8 colleges and universities. The scholarships were financed by one corporate sponsor, McDonald’s; two NAACP endowed trust established by Levy Alexander and Salome C. Worthington; Unity Lodge #12; Dr. Bonnie N. Marshall; and contributors to the Georgia M. Powers Scholarship Fund. Since 2005, the Branch has awarded $221,200 in scholarships to deserving students. Dr. Donna Hargens, Superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools, and Mrs. Diane Porter, Chairperson of JCPS Board of Education, gave words of encouragement and congratulations to the awardees. The Master of Ceremonies was Mr. John Marshall, Deputy Superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools for Diversity, Equity, and Poverty Programs.
