Raoul Cunningham Social Justice Award Honoring a Legacy of Advocacy, Leadership, and Commitment to Equality

The Raoul Cunningham Social Justice Award recognizes individuals who embody the spirit of service, courage, and transformative leadership demonstrated by Raoul Cunningham. This prestigious award recognizes those whose actions and advocacy have significantly advanced civil rights, promoted equity, and empowered marginalized communities.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Commitment to Social Justice

    • Demonstrated dedication to advancing civil rights, equity, and justice.

    • A track record of addressing systemic inequities and championing initiatives that promote inclusivity and fairness.

  2. Leadership in Advocacy

    • Evidence of sustained, impactful leadership in civil rights, community organizing, or public service.

    • The ability to inspire and mobilize others in the pursuit of social justice.

  3. Impact and Innovation

    • Proven impact on local, regional, or national levels through innovative approaches to addressing social justice issues.

    • Contributions that have led to measurable improvements in policy, community outcomes, or awareness.

  4. Courage and Resilience

    • A history of confronting challenges or opposition with courage, resilience, and integrity.

    • Demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversity to achieve justice and equality.

  5. Alignment with Raoul Cunningham's Legacy

    • Exemplifies the principles, dedication, and passion for justice that define Raoul Cunningham's life and work.

    • Commitment to creating a lasting legacy of social change and empowerment.

Submission Deadline

All materials must be submitted via this form or emailed to naacp2026@gmail.com no later than May 1st, 2026, at 11:59 PM EST. Incomplete applications or those received after this deadline will not be considered.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen and a legal resident of Metro Louisville.

  • Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (C+) or higher.

  • Be an undergraduate student (funding is limited to a maximum of four academic years).

  • Open to individuals from all sectors, including community leaders, activists, educators, and public officials, whose work has significantly advanced the cause of social justice.

  • Nominees may be self-nominated or nominated by others.

Required Documents for Upload

Please have the following files ready to upload (PDF or JPEG preferred):

  1. Official Transcript (End-of-year). Emailed to naacp2026@gmail.com by June 15th, 2026.

  2. Recent Photograph (Please sign the back before scanning).

  3. College Acceptance Letter.

  4. Academic Reference Letter (On school letterhead).

  5. Personal Reference Letter.

  6. Advocacy Essay (Max 600 words, double-spaced, 12-point font).

Important Note on Attendance

If you are selected as a recipient, you MUST attend the annual Scholarship Awards Reception. Failure to attend without an official excuse from the Scholarship Committee Chair may result in the forfeiture of the award.

Integrity Statement: Any applicant who knowingly misrepresents information and is awarded a scholarship will be required to refund the awarded amount and will become ineligible for any future financial support from the NAACP Louisville Branch.

Nomination Process:
Nominations should include a detailed summary of the nominee's contributions, a brief biography, and at least one letter of support. The selection committee will review submissions based on the outlined criteria to identify a recipient who embodies the award's ideals.
