NAACP Louisville Branch Condemns Dismissal of Charges in Breonna Taylor Case

Louisville, Ky. — The NAACP Louisville Branch is deeply disturbed and outraged by a federal judge’s decision to dismiss charges against two former Louisville police officers whose actions were directly tied to the raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor.

U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson III dismissed the charges with prejudice against former Louisville Metro Police Department officers Kyle Meany and Joshua Jaynes. The ruling comes just one week after the U.S. Department of Justice requested that the charges be dropped “in the interest of justice.” Because the charges were dismissed with prejudice, they cannot be refiled in the future.

Meany and Jaynes had been accused of conspiring to provide false information in order to obtain the search warrant that led to the botched police raid at Ms. Taylor’s apartment in March 2020. Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was fatally shot during the raid.

The NAACP Louisville Branch believes Judge Simpson’s decision disregards the facts of the case and further erodes public confidence in the justice system. Had the warrant not been obtained through false information, officers would not have been at Ms. Taylor’s home that night.

To date, no one has been criminally charged directly in connection with Ms. Taylor’s killing.

The NAACP Louisville Branch says this outcome is yet another troubling sign that the current federal leadership at the Department of Justice does not value accountability when Black lives are taken.

“Justice delayed has now become justice denied,” the organization stated. “This decision sends a dangerous message that those who abuse their authority and manipulate the system will not be held accountable.”

Despite this setback, the NAACP Louisville Branch reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for justice on behalf of Breonna Taylor and her family.

“We will not stop fighting,” the branch said. “We stand firmly with the Taylor family and with all those who demand transparency, accountability, and equal justice under the law.”
