Brothers for the Ballots: Empowering Student Voices at the University of Louisville

By Rawleigh Richardson, Chair, Community Coordination Committee, NAACP Louisville Branch

The NAACP Louisville Branch proudly celebrates the powerful civic engagement work led by the Alpha Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the NAACP at the University of Louisvillethrough their recent event, Brothers for the Ballots. This initiative exemplifies what happens when leadership, collaboration, and purpose come together to educate and empower the next generation of voters.

Building Civic Awareness Through Education

The event was designed to equip students with the knowledge and confidence needed to participate fully in Kentucky’s civic process. As the document notes, the Alpha Pi Chapter hosted an “interactive experience focused on understanding the legislative process and the importance of civic participation”. Students engaged in hands‑on learning that demystified how government works and why their voices matter.

Breakout sessions provided practical, real‑world skills:

  • Finding Your Legislator – Students learned how to identify their representatives and interpret legislative priorities by reviewing sponsored bills. The document highlights that “primary sponsorship is marked by an asterisk and often reflects stronger leadership on an issue” .

  • How a Bill Becomes a Law – Participants followed a bill’s journey from introduction to the governor’s desk, gaining clarity on readings, amendments, and the veto process.

  • Applying Civic Knowledge – Students practiced reading bills, identifying new or removed language, and developing strategies for contacting legislators based on a bill's position in the legislative process.

These sessions transformed abstract concepts into accessible, actionable knowledge.

Collaboration That Strengthens Community Impact

The event’s success was amplified through meaningful partnerships. As the document states, Brothers for the Ballot“was strengthened through meaningful collaboration with organizations dedicated to civic engagement and community empowerment.

The NAACP at the University of Louisville played a key role in connecting students to advocacy, leadership, and long‑term community involvement. Meanwhile, Vote Everywhere ensured that education translated into action by providing on‑site voter registration. Students were able to register on the spot—an essential step toward building a more engaged electorate.

A Message of Empowerment

I was honored to serve as a guest speaker, sharing insights on voter registration in Kentucky and pathways for students to get involved with the NAACP. The document notes that the presentation offered “valuable information on how students can get involved with the NAACP and make a difference within their communities”. That is the heart of our mission: empowering individuals to turn knowledge into meaningful action.

Student Voices Reflect the Impact

The testimonials speak for themselves:

  • “Information accessibility is crucial in today’s socio‑political climate. Thank you to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha and members of NAACP for the knowledge!”

  • “I will be using this information in the future!”

  • “This was my first event… and let me just say, I am registered today!”

These reflections affirm that when we invest in civic education, we strengthen our democracy.

A Collective Thank You

On behalf of the NAACP Louisville Branch and the Community Coordination Committee, I extend my deepest gratitude to:

Your commitment to civic empowerment is shaping a more informed, engaged, and justice‑driven campus community.

Moving Forward Together

Brothers for the Ballots demonstrates what is possible when education, collaboration, and action come together. As the document concludes, the event “created a space where students could see the real impact of their voices”.

The NAACP Louisville Branch looks forward to continuing this work—supporting students, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that every voice in our community is heard, valued, and empowered.
